The Gothenborg museum of art was built in 1923 and is located in the cultural heart of Gothenborg at the square ”Götaplatsen”.
Architects were Sigfrid Ericsson and Arvid Bjerke.
The extension contains a new Entrance Hall at street level with a new staircase taking visitors up eight meters to the existing Sculpture Hall, two new exhibition halls:
“Stena salen” and “Hasselblad Center”, an art café and a book shop.
The project also includes new offices and work shops for the Hasselblad Foundation.
The entrance doors in stainless steel and bronze are by artist Pål Svensson.
The project was initiated by Cullberg Arkitektkontor in 1987. We proposed that the world famous “Hasselblad Photo Prize” should be presented at the new premises at Götaplatsen.
We also arranged the funding of the project by donations from the Hasselblad Foundation and the shipping magnate Sten A Olsson.
The project was developed in close cooperation with Folke Edwards, former director of the museum.
The year after the inauguration of the extension the museum earned three stars in the “Guide Michelin”- meaning it’s worth a trip to Gothenborg!
